I've been doing a bit of research in the SSTC section lately and learnt that GDTs isolate the fets from the driver circuitry.
This may sound silly but would it be possible to use a GDT in a ZVS driver? This way if the fets blow up it won't short something out in the driver section. You'd probably have to modify some bits though like the ultrafast diodes and figure something out as a replacement.
This thought probably won't work but I'm just curious about it.

I recall you having problems with the original ZVS driver so is this why you want to use a gate drive transformer?
I am not too sure if it can be done but here is a circuit that uses a GDT in order to switch MOSFET's driving a flyback, you might be able to make something of it
Sorry I am not much use.
Alex.
