I pulled apart an old monitor today, and along with the flyback I found a few irf630s and irf640s, I'm just wondering if they'll be ok to run in a zvs or 555 timer based flyback driver, and if any of you have experience with them?

These are 200 V transistors, with 9 A and 18 A maximum current. You can use them, but not with the original primary winding of the flyback, that requires the 1600 V transistor (usually bipolar) that you can find in the board too and other components around it, as a fast diode in parallel, a high-voltage capacitor to limit the collector voltage, a driving transformer, etc. The maximum current is somewhat low too.

You can, how ever it won't last too long before either the 555 or MOSFET goes pop (in my experience).

Thanks for the pointers, I think I'm going to make http://flybak.wap.sh/More_1 that with my irf640s, and order some irf250s for a mazilli driver as well. What do you think of that resonant driver?

That link doesn't appear to work.

Sorry, it's no2 here Link2 I'm also thinking about getting some irf540s, they seem cheap and powerful, will they work well with that driver?
