Say you have a great idea and want to get it manufactured, and venture capital could likely be provided via kickstarter. How would one go about that? Technologically speaking it'd be simple, but one would need injection molded plastic and a surface mount pcb...

is a great place. You give them the .stp model (generated from solidworks or other CAD program) and they make the part. They can either do injection molding or CNC aluminum and plastic parts. Then you can get PCBs from any number of fab houses.

Hrm, that certainly seems simple. I'd need 3 pieces of plastic, or maybe 2 if I can cad the thing correctly. Looks like I'll have to test and get some things 3d printed at school first.
It'd be nice to use my 4hv skills to make some monies
Know of any good smd places? I'd need boards cut and assembled, since smd + me == ARRRRRGGHH

injection molding prototypes are expensive, as tooling will need to be made. 3D prototyping (e.g. ponoko) is much cheaper.
SMD would be best prototyped by hand. I had some SMD boards assembled (quantity 6), and it was ~$1000, each board with ~400 pads on top and 200 on bottom, .4mm pitch min.

Just because it exists does not mean there is no worth in exploring it further. For example, you may be able to add new features, implement the concept better, produce better system performance, build it cheaper or with better quality components, for example. If there is a reason for the innovation and it is achievable, have a think about it. With prototyping services being more accessible now than ever before, the barrier to entry is lowering. It's your call, just my £0.2 :P
