Last time I checked shorting out mains was something most people actually tried to avoid, but anyway...

You want a maximum current of 13A at 240V, and therefore need a (inductive) reactance of roughly 18.5 ohms in your choke.

Now you can calculate the inductance needed from this simple equation: Xl = 2*pi*f*L

Remember that the hot wire is called hot for a reason and that reason is that it is at 240V potential in respect to the ground you stand on. One simple mistake could have dire consequences.

If there was anything that you didn't understand, I'd suggest you stay away from mains for now.

I wanted to short it to put mains through various things like mainboards, etc.

So I need an indcutor of 18.5 ohms?

Ahh, anyway I think I'm going to build another taser, is there any simple designs for one that is low amperage?

My stupidity is keeping me, so I'm not going to go near mains. It's the only thing I'm interested in that I suck at.

learn by doing, just dont get killed too soon. this power and hv engineering takes a while to figure out its complicated but rewarding, youll get there like the rest of us, just dont expect to be a master in a day or a week.

You could make a big capacitor bank and charge to a couple hundred volts or so, you could charge it a current limited source and still get big bangs without blowing the fuse in the plug (assuming you are in the UK) or the MCB/breaker.

Taking time to read around this site is a good start, as is logging into the chatroom and reading what people say. Intelligent use of Google will find you a LOT of information too.

Why the crapezoid would you want to play with mains?

Same reason as you might want to play in the traffic or on the railway tracks. Maybe you should do that instead, it could be safer! smile

An electric fire, kettle etc, makes a great ballast, just connect it in series with the mains and whatever you're wanting to fry. Including yourself if you don't heed the safety warnings above.

A variac doesn't, as it just reduces the voltage without limiting the current, you'll simply burn out the brush and ruin it.

Well I used kettle to limit the current to 9AMPS, as the resistance was about 26ohms, (although my multimeter said 31) and I cooked a frankfurter.
