Seems that one of their own safety procedures inadvertently made things worse.

Had they known in advance about the 14 metre tsunami they might have been able to supercool the core in *1
which *might* have reduced the damage.

the history and discovery/science channels have pretty good explanations like "zero hour", "Modern Marvels: engineering disasters" and others about chernobyle, challenger shuttle, and im sure when enough can be found through investigatve journalism, fukushima will be next.

The uranium in the core of the UK Windscale reactor that burnt down in 1957 is still molten, so attempts to 'decommission' it have been shelved for another 30 years, I believe, the problem passed down from one generation to another, much like nuclear waste itself.

I don't suppose the Fukushima site will be decontaminated in our lifetime either, though the UK media have been practising active forgetting at the government's behest almost since the dreadful day it happened. Fukushima had a very major re-processing contract with Sellafield - formerly known as Windscale.

The abuse of the homeless - the "scroungers" - could have been thought up by the present UK government.

It gets better, there is talk of a possible ongoing thermonuclear plasma torch-like fire(!) due to interaction of superheated plutonium with tritium.

Yes this is admittedly a worst case scenario, but even as little as a 1 kiloton nuclear explosion at fukushima would be an extinction level event for most of Japan and the US.
Its serious enough that President Obama should take over the entire operation and if need be send in nuclear experts from anywhere needed to contain this.

See Link2

(warning: tinfoil hattery alert, please check sources!)

Sellafield is even worse potentially, thanks to the Thatcher era miner's strike we do not know what went on at the plant.
The 50 year secrecy means that the general population have no idea just how much radioactive material exists at the plant under appalling storage conditions, in one case inside a silo originally designed for short term storage of new fuel rods.
Estimates here put the total at 80 Chernobyls, possibly higher but the Cameron government have refused to even comment citing the 50 year "secrecy" laws.

With this sort of thing the Iceberg theory applies, ie if you think it is bad it is actually 10* worse. (9/10ths of an iceberg are underwater)
