Hi, I threw this together while waiting for parts for a bigger coil, then rebuilt it on a nicer board etc. It has a 3/8in or so secondary with about 400 turns of 0.15mm wire on, I think, it's about 3 inches tall. The power's from one or two aa batteries into a camera flash circuit, which then goes into a CW multiplier giving about 4-5kv. The spark gap is adjustable and operates best at about 2mm, it's primary cap is 500 picofarads and the primary coil is 4.5 turns 0f 1.5mm copper wire. The topload is two 2 pence pieces to give you an idea of size. The tuning may be horrific but I'm happy with the sparks and corona as it is. I can't find any smaller sgtcs on the web, have I made the smallest in the world?

OMG AWWW TINY COIL!!!!!!!!!!! (I have an obsession with miniaturized things.) MAKE A VIDEO O_O I must see this coil in action. :D OMG that is so cute! Put it on a hat, run a wire down to sole of shoes, and g to school :P

Until 5 seconds ago I thought that my SGTC was on the small end. My secondary is a foot tall and runs at well over a MHz, but you could probably put your entire coil on the topload of mine.

I am also amazed that you got a spark gap to fire reliably at such low power. I am impressed, very nice work.

Thanks for the replies, it hasn't been my most studious half term, I hope I'll be forgiven that by my physics teacher at least... I'll try and get a video as well.

I was planning on making something around that size at first, but i was bored of waiting for the components on order and school starts soon so I just made one with what I had. I don't know how I did it either, I was tempted to put everything on the oscilloscope after its first run but I couldn't see the point, I knew the secondary would resonate at something ridiculous. I have a couple rm8 ferrite cores so I think I'll wind one of them so I can get a bit more juice through the CW and open up the spark gap a bit, while still keeping a good frequency.

Thanks for the replies!
