I build Steve's SSTC with option to bypass stock 555 interrupter so i can connect MIDI interrupter on it. All went great until i wanted to use optic cable to connect TC to MIDI interrupter. I couldnt get any reasonable priced optic recievers/transmitters. My problem is that i want to use good old copper wire (cable) to connect TC to MIDI interrupter im afraid that i would fry my notebook. In my(Uzzors2k's) MIDI- interrupter there is one optoisolator on input from PC

Uzzors2k MIDI interrupter http://uzzors2k.4hv.org/index.php?page=midiinterrupter
I hope that someone understands me and sorry for my crappy english.

I use fiber transmitter/reciever from Digikey.com that are a reasonable price.
Fiber cable part# A1700-10-ND
Transmitter part# FB129-ND
Reciever part# FB142-ND

Approximately how easy is it to build a good audio modulated SSTC (1 being so easy one with virtually know knowledge of electronics can build it and 10 being so impossible that I should put the idea off until a LOT later?) I have substantial electronics knowledge but I've rarely used logic gates and haven't ever touched much semiconductor stuff. So do you think I can build one? O_O I didn't understand much of a word he said (except MIDI). Als how pricey is it? When you say "reasonable price..." how much total would it be? I spent close to 200 on SGTC. Will it be more, less or about the same? :P Of course my dad will be like : You already built an SGTC/ finish building SGTC. Sochances are I will not be able t build one till summer or next year (as in 2013). but good luck on YOUR coil :P

I live in Denmark and imported these same opto parts from digikey, its about as cheap as you can get them. Even with shipping and import taxes to Denmark

Its relative easy to build a sound modulated SSTC, where you just use the output from a playback unit or amplifier to connect directly to a audio pwm interupter like the one I used in my SSTC II here: Link2

If you can build a SSTC, you can also build this audio modulator. It does not work with a midi signal, only audio input.

You should also spend more time sourcing cheap parts, if you get to take apart a few televisions, UPS, SMPS etc, you should have covered 75% of the cost in making a medium SSTC. You properly only need to get some zeners, diodes etc yourself. MOSFETs too if the stuff you take apart is only using power transistors.

I tried and it was relatively pain free. I use an Altera FPGA so I had extra time of driving obnoxious tools.

I'm no musician but I was able to write a midi parser with all the features except pitch bend commands (will do later) in a few hours.

Peer Pressure FTW - Everyone's doing it? Ok Ok, not everyone - just the cool kids ;)

Once again I'm in my PJs - but consider yourself lucky - I used to hack nude until I took up arc welding and pan frying bacon 0.O

A FPGA or a micro controller is, at the moment, way out of scope for HighVoltageChicks matter, she is only just got into high voltage should start simple as some of us did, like myself.

I used to do early morning hacking nude until I accidently, twice, zapped myself on the inner thigh with the output lead from a flyback transformer that hang out over the table suprised

My first attempt was analog control with a 555 timer - which works great for MIDI. It worked about the same as a Linear Tech LT1508/9 PFC chip - tho the PFC controller reproduced voice a little more clearly with low interrupter rates because of greater modulation flexibility
