It's a compromise, 0.1 gives lowest THD but worst thermal stability. Polytone guitar amps used 0.05 ohm, but to me that just seems too small.

The ballast resistor goes in the emitter of the compound transistor, in other words, the emitter of the driver transistor and the MOSFET drain connect to one end, and the speaker to the other. You don't need one per MOSFET.

I bought 25 0.22ohm 5w dual resistors intended as emitter resistors in amps. I always thought the resistors always go on emitter/source, that is between the fets and the rails in my cfp thing.

I might just rewire to EF and see if i can hear a difference, that would spare me the issues of source resistors and thermal compensation, though some ppl have told me that the source resistors should always be used even if their not needed.

Oh, the dual resistors should do fine. They don't go between the sources and the rails, honest! :)

I've got a Maplin mosfet amp kit that uses the 2SJ50/2SK135 in an EF configuration, with no emitter resistors, and just a pot to set the bias voltage (no Vbe limiter) It works fine, and hi-fi guys seemed to think that the Maplin kit sounded OK. The Iq does vary a little bit with temperature, but it's not critical.

In my own lateral mosfet amp, I used 0.18 ohm emitter resistors, but they were mainly just sensors for the current limiting circuit.

Heres a EF version that i might try: Link2

A bit high THD at 20kHz though, but its prolly good enuf.

And with the cfp version based on conner's tips: Link2

No, that's not right, you have to connect the emitters of Q4 and Q7 back to the ends of R16 and R20, not to the output node. The way you have it, the ballast resistors are inside the feedback loop, they're not helping with the thermal stability.

Oops i thought that dident matter.

Revised schemo: Link2

Bte wouldent it be even better if the drivers were attached to the main heatsink as well ?

This amp have now been rewired to EF output and runs a stable 150mA per channel for bias, heatsinks barely get warm even after a hour of loud music.

I havent used any source resistors yet though.
