Like most EEE undergrads I am currently looking for a summer internship for the summer of 2012, but the chances of me landing a good internship don't seem too high given the number of people going for these jobs. Has anybody got any advice on how to boost my chances of landing one? I'm guessing a lot of you will have been through this process at some point in your lives Or even better than this, does anybody currently work at a company who offers summer internships? Being able to direct an email straight to the person looking for the intern rather than to a generic recruitment email address would be of great help.
Oh and I should add, I currently live in Sheffield in the UK, and originally come from Darlington, so something around these areas would be ideal, although I would happily move anywhere in the world if the company would be willing to help me out financially with the move.

I've gotten my internships by meeting companies at on-campus career fairs and recruiting events. Smaller companies (at least in my area) will send real engineers and engineering managers that you can talk to and get a good idea about whether the company and you are a good fit for each other. Of course this depends on your school organizing that sort of thing, so if your school organizes such events you should definitely go.
Obviously personal contacts can be a big help, a good place to start would be professors at your school. Most professors have been involved in professional industry work and they frequently have some contacts. Unfortunately I can't be of any help for UK jobs.
