Japanese mathematician breaks record for determining the value of pi A Japanese man has shattered his own world record for determining the value of pi, calculating the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter to 10 trillion digits on a home-made computer.
By Julian Ryall in Tokyo Daily Telegraph 18 Oct 2011
Shigeru Kondo, 56, only set the previous record – of 5 trillion digits – in August of last year, but immediately set about bettering that record.
Mr Kondo, a systems engineer for a food company based in Nagano Prefecture, northern Japan, assembled a computer in his home with a 48-terabyte hard drive and began crunching numbers in October last year.
He completed his latest mathematical feat on Sunday, according to Kyodo News, but the project caused friction with his family.
The temperature in the room where the computer was constantly in operation climbed as high as 104F.
"We could dry the laundry immediately but we had to pay ¥30,000 (£249) a month for electricity," said his wife, Yukiko.
His previous record-setting calculation nearly came to grief on more than one occasion, Mr Kondo said, including one occasion when his daughter tripped a circuit breaker when she turned a hair dryer on. The project was saved when the computer switched to an emergency 10-minute backup power source.
Mr Kondo's interest in calculating the value of pi dates back to his college days, he said, and he plans to apply to the Guinness Book of Records for recognition of his achievement.
