I'm in the planning stage of a small sgtc, and just looking around I see tesla coils like this and this Why do some have the spark gap before the cap, and some after the cap. Why is this? And are they any different, which is better if so?

You should always put the spark gap across the transformer (power supply), otherwise the high frequency tank voltage will be fed back into the power supply, possibly damaging it.
