I've recently come into a collection of 10 or so 5 GB Hard Drives. What is the most creative way I could utilize them (not counting taking them apart) otherwize there just going to sit on my desk... angry

are they scsi? If they are you just need a scsi card (perferably a raid card) and make a nice 30ish gb raid5 array...

Paperweight? tongue

If they were IDE, a standard 4 per node software raid driver and or a distributed NFS.

It would make an interesting distributed cluster database too. Personally never tried this with anything other than an oracle db – but MySQL says its supported Link2 .
The less time spent with seeks may improve the performance by some degree (mind you not as fast as the surprisingly fast ram-drive trick for read only tables.)

A small separate dedicated swap drive (or applications pool drive) will improve performance a bit (just make sure it’s a fast DMA drive.) If in windows fix the page file to a specific size then optimize the drive with a utility.

Personally I like to turn older systems with smaller drives into network tools like smart routers, file and print servers etc.

Due to the cost of
-additional power supply
-mounting hardware
-RAID controller etc.
I think it would be un-economical to use the disks compared to a new 30 GB drive.

So
-find an institution (school etc.) that needs them for upgrades/repairs/etc.
-pimp-up one by making an acrylic window to see the insides operating with led illumination
-stack them up with a 12V battery to make a gyroscopic stabiliser for a bicycle
-sell them on eBay and use the cash to buy paint/brushes/paper art materials (creative;)
-practice instant data-destruction for when the cops raid you for copyright/hacking

IF you open them up you will have
-plenty of aluminium disks and rings for a Thompson coilgun disk-launcher
-enough NdFeB magnets to make motors/alternators etc. (esp. new-age devices)

ForceLabs: A SCSI HD has a different kind of connector to an ordinary one. It's usually 50 pin rather than the 40 pins of the regular IDE interface.

Or, you can always make some AfroMod's Harddrive Audio Monitors! Ha. Actually for a hard drive, my set had surprising sound.
