So I recently contacted Adelaide Metro, the public transport department that runs all the trams in my city. When I asked them about possibly getting an old mercury arc rectifier they responded telling me they stopped using them years ago, and that they didn't have any left. So does anyone know if any state in Australia might still use them? Maybe they only got rid of them a couple years ago and might have some stored away somewhere? I was hoping to get one to add to my glassware collection I'm beginning to build up

I've seen pictures of abandoned cinemas which have been urbex'ed, and most of those contain smaller mercury arc rectifiers for the old lighting systems. Might be worth trying to find some old cinemas/theatres and contacting the owners?

Some were called Hewittic rectifiers. My mate and myself almost blew one up in a plant where it was used to run a 'roll grinding machine'. We made a switching blunder during tests that caused the main contactor to close into a stopped motor. We ended up replacing six large fuses and never revealed what happened. The bulb for that machine was shipped in a wooden case and suspended on springs.
There are little ones, too. They were used in charging panels, and needed a rocker to tilt them to start. The maintenance department once mounted one of those in a plexiglass case for display. We electricians called those mercury rectifier systems a 'Buck Rodgers'.
