Hey guys! I was with my big DRSSTC making testing, and something come to me. Bad tunning can cause flash-over? If I have a current envelope that increase very fast (like 1 cicle) this will stress the secondary and the easy for her is a flash over. Can I be right?

You make me feel stupid to say my large drsstc, 12" x 48" runs at 15 cycles. At 76vac in and 4A of current I can get 40" sparks. And I have no problems at all with flash overs, my primary is 16" diameter.
Maybe coupling issues or primary too close...? You do have a breakout point correct?

Well after seeing your video, I see streamers breakout out on the left and right of the topload. Which tells me your breakout point isnt really effective if you even have one. It looks like you have something sticking out the center, but its too low to be a breakout with that size topload. I would just try sticking a metal point on one of the sides. Even just for testing you could just get a metal rod, even a coat hanger and unbend it, and just let it hang maybe 4 inches off the edge.
I know from personal experience with SSTCs, no breakout, they can flash over easier. And yours is breaking out in multiple spots, so im just going to take a guess that yours isnt existing, maybe too small, which is causing it to occasionally fluke and cause a flash over.

Well, maybe the small breakpoint, that was a 2cm copper wire coming out the toroid, was so small that was on a very similar potential, so it wasn't a good BREAKpoint.

My topload is 35" with 10" diameter disks, and it won't break out to its full potential until I get to about 4". Doesn't hurt to try anything larger just to see how it performs though. Also, how do the leafs on that bush to the right of the coil look? :D
