Hi.
Seems that the latest research suggests that Alzheimers may in fact be triggered by a biochemical cascade of misfolded proteins similar to prions, but substantially less infectious.
This also explains why it seems to run in families, as the same SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) would be present. It seems that the protein becomes more sensitive to outside influence so is more likely to misfold, and the odds increase the older the cells get as accumulated damage builds.
