I am going to try to make Steve’s SSTC 5 mini again and hopefully this time will finish it. I want to bring it to my physics class when I’m finished and was wondering if I can ground it to the outlet ground, will that hurt anything? There will be a computer in the room.

I have a SSTC which makes some 40cm sparks with up to 1.4 kW input power and I ground it to mains without problems. Put a 0.1 uF "X2 grade" caps from live to earth and from neutral to earth.

I think most people here will say it's not good to run it in a room of computers because of the rf that the coil creates. I would still try to manage a ground rod. When I did my coil at school I ran a wire all the way out the window. To ground. Worked good for me heh. Just dont use mains ground.

The caps are used so that the rf current travels through all three wiring conductors and not just the protective earth. The idea is to decrease the secondary ground-point impedance and to eliminate differential line noise which could possibly damage some electronics.

Ok, I am on ther first floor next to a window so i will be able to do that. So after its grounded to earth i should be claer to run it near computers or in the same room. Near as is 8 feet away

Dont count on my words and try to sue me for my thoughts here.
I run my DRSSTC/SGTC/SSTC about 6ft from my computer and i never have any issues. its been with me for 3 years, with about 2 years of TC play. I use to do a mini sstc on my computer desk. I never had any problems with RF with my computer. Nothing glitched out, system runs fine.
Now my computer isnt a MAC, which most schools have. So I have no idea how good the RF is. My computer case is about 2.5mm thick of AL sheet plate around the side, with plastic (Alum behind that) infront and back. All grounded, so its very well shielded against RF.
That said, Don't come back to me if the rare case something did happen. As well, my computer isnt standard in schools. But, yeah. It does wonders to open the window and run a wire to ground. Works nicely.
My DRSSTC is mains ground (by method above) and RF grounded.
