555 flyback transformer MOSFET gets hot.

I built a similar driver; it has 3 resistors and one .o1 cap. I’m using an irfp260(that’s what I had on hand) and was wondering if there is a mosfet that would be better suited for this application, ie that would not heat up so much.

Use a TC4420CPA between the 555 and the mosfet. It makes a big difference. Use a low R on the mosfet gate, 1 or 2 ohms. I'm not using any R on the gate.
The TC4420CPA should have 2-5uF of capacitance directly across it's power pins. With a good non electrolytic capacitor, this also makes a big difference.
Irfp260 is more then enough and should not heat up with a proper driver.
