Well, I got bored of waiting for parts to arrive for my CW multiplier, so I went ahead and built a simple 555 driver.

Its a pretty simple setup, using only the following parts:

1x 555N
1x 1k ohm 5W resistor
1x 47k ohm 1/2W resistor
1x 100V 1000uF electrolytic
1x 50V 1nF ceramic cap
1x 50V 10nF ceramic cap
1x IRF540 MOSFET

I honestly couldn't believe it worked the first time I clipped it to the battery. Had some issues with arcing on the pins, which was solved by shorting out the 2 troublesome pins. Still trying to deal with the screen and focus leads arcing to each other. The only issue with the driver circuit is heat dissipation, which is still rather bad, even with the whole circuit sitting on a huge heatsink with a 12V pc fan aimed at it!

Ouput is pretty good, it'll start arcing at about 5-6 cm and has pretty intense vivid corona out to about 7.5-8 cm. I think it's pulling about 240W, not too sure though.

Anyway, here's the circuit diagram amd some arc pics:

Beautiful photos! :)

Have you tuned it at all? What frequency are you running at?

Thanks, I borrowed my Dad's Nikon D3000 SLR.

I haven't done any tuning, and honestly wouldn't know where to begin. Same for the frequency, I don't have an oscilloscope, only a dodgy $20 multimeter, but you can still hear it as a clear high pitch whine, so I'd say close to 20kHz at a rough guesstimate. :D

I wonder if there's a way to put another flyback in the circuit with the primary's in parallel and the secondary's in series?

If it's whining, it's below 20 kHZ...

Yes its called "anti-parallel" but youll need the older flybacks or iggies without the internal diodes.
