Hii,this is my second attempt to build a SGTC.my first one wasn't good as it was away from resonance (i was too young then :D ).So I am trying to build a better one now.I am gonna use a D.C fly back transformer as a power source for my Tesla coil with ZVS driver.my coil characteristics are.
secondary : 1144 turn on 3" PVC tube
cap.Bank : 25 nano 40 K.V home rolled capacitors (as descried in HvWiKi )
spark gap :4 segment static gap
primary : 15 turn of 1.5 mm copper wire wound around 7" plastic tube
top load : toroid made of AL ducting tube 4" X 10"

it is resonating at 4th turn of primary with streamers of 3" from breakout point and small streamers from toroid it self but they appear only in dark :(
BUT I GOT TWO PROBLEMS...
every time i install a PC fan for spark gap quenching it stop working after a while may b because of primary field or sth..!!
3 capacitors burnt out of my 5 rolled capacitors but not in the same day.I am sticking them together in a form of cylinder.may b because that every one not just affected by its own corona but by the corona produced by the five caps. ??!
so should i separate them or what??!
also is that output is ordinary from the FBT power source or i need more tuning and optimizing ??!
THANKS IN ADVANCE

1.) If you roll your own capacitors, especially for tesla coils, they produce a lot of corona and will fail eventually, such as all capacitors. the only way to increase the life of the capacitors is to pot them in something or (if you don't have access to something that will pull a vacuum) you can simply dip them in molten perifan wax (a melted candle). Dip it multiple times until it forms a layer on the outside, they should last longer and be more efficient.

2.) Your arc length depends on how close to the res frequency but also your power input. I had a 300 watt ZVS flyback powered tesla coil that produced ~6-7 inch streams.

does the 25 nano cap. bank is too much for the FBT ??
BTW : i power my ZVS with 30v and when i pull an arc it draws 9amps. and voltage drops to 17 !!

Try "painting" the plates with oil (a vegetable oil sould be ok) before you roll them up, use a thick layer of oil, if it drips from the sides after you wind it that may be a good sign. The idea of this is to displace the air out of the capacitor.
