A bit sensationalist, and assumes worst case scenario i.e. 1859 level Carrington event...
However it does raise the serious issue of just how prepared the U.S. Govt are if a serious solar flare happens in the near future.
Last time I checked, there were only a handful of spare large power transformers to replace the >100 or so over the contintental US. Takes a year to build them and they cannot be easily repaired if damaged.

' the Fukushima catastrophe is now undeniably the worst nuclear disaster in the history of human civilization.' - Erm can maybe think of one that was slightly worse . . . .

May I suggest that we don't yet know the full extent of Fukushima.
If past experience is anything to go by, I'm sure there is still plenty they are 'covering up'.
Also, radiation is still escaping, it is still 'out of control' and no-one knows the full extent of the melt-down.
While the airbourne contamination can be monitored to an extent, we have no idea of conditions in the ground under the plant where the majority of molten fuel rods are likely to still be gradually sinking deeper and deeper.
If (or when) the water table becomes contaminated, that's when the 'real problems' will start.

That is true, a very valid point there, I suppose I was a little naive, ah well, live and learn. Maybe a comment on how biased the article was? Little inaccurate in places as well.

I'm sure you are right, Harry, and I have no more idea than anyone else what the full consequences of Fukushima will be, but it will be years before the full story emerges.
