Hey guys,

I've got my ZVS driver working fine now with 36v and 48v. However, I need some more powerful MOSFETs as I will be cranking the driver up 60v+ when I make a new PSU. i Have found one here: FQL40N50 but the switching time seems a little slow to me compared to the IRFP250s.

Would IGBTs or MOSFETs be better? I know IGBTs have a bigger voltage and current range, but do some of them need a diode connected across the collector and emitter?

What other components would need to be changed? I would thing the zener diodes and maybe the ultrafast diodes too.

Cheers,
Jozef

I use Fairchild 47N60F. It's rated 600V @ 47Amps! Here Link2 is the data sheet for it. It is fairly expensive if you buy it from the usual electronic parts supply companies, but I've gotten mine on Ebay for a fraction of the retail price. Check out Ebay auction number: 180666051914

Thanks Xray! I usally but my fets from eBay cheap in bulk so money is no problem. 600v at 47a is a POWERFUL Mosfet!!!

Do you think any of the diodes will need changing too?

Well, it depends on what type of diodes that you currently are using. I happen to be a little weak in this area of electrical design, so I think you would be better off if someone else with more experience in the design and operation of this type of circuit. I've been dabbling in electronics for many years, but I only recently began playing around with mosfets and their associated circuitry.

It would be helpful if you could let us know what type of diodes that you currently use, and it would be especially helpful if you could post a schematic diagram of your circuit. Then I'm sure that one of 4hv's talented and knowledgeable engineers will be able to help you.

The schematic is a standard ZVS just with a couple of modifications. For the zener diodes, I use the 18v 1N4748 and I use UF4007 for the ultrafast. My resonant cap across the primary is 2x2 MMC, probably 0,68uF. The current driver I use has been modified for a 48v input but for the new ZVS that will use 70v will be a new circuit because over-modifying the current ZVS will be messy.

if you use a separate supply for the mosfet gates (12v going to the 470ohm resistors, 70v to the inductor) then I don't think you have to worry about changing the zeners, resistors, or diodes.

Do both the 12v and 70v that go to the circuit have to be from the same PSU?

nope. just have them share the same ground (or earth ground.) use diodes if youre worried about one feeding in to the other.

So you connect both of the grounds together even if they are different types of PSUs?
