Hello, I have just finished building a coil and am having some trouble with it.
The specs are as follows: Power Supply: NST (10397.1V, 52mA) Main Capacitor: Russian ceramic dorknobs (0.0022uF, 30000V) Main Gap: synchonous rotary spark gap (120bps) Secondary Coil: 2'' diameter, 9.5"' high (450 turns 26awg) Topload: pure aluminum cake pan (about 13pF) Primary Coil: almost 11 turns 1/4'' copper tube (currently tapped at 9 turns)
The problem is that the rotary gap does not seem to function correctly. oftenly the rotary will not fire at all and the saftey gap will fire constantly instead. however the pulsing light of the safety gap shows the rotary more or less lined up to fire.
With just the saftey gap firring it yeild long but pulsing arcs, that make me fear for the life of my NST, as the saftey gaps are all ready much farther away than where the transformer alone can make them fire.
even when I do get the rotary to fire it only lights up two out of the four stationary electrodes, and slowly switches between sets. however, it still yeilds more consistent arcs than the saftey gap.
I have not had time to properly tune the coil, since I am now back in school. also their is the occasional problem af arcs between the primary and secondary's base, perhaps a grounding issue.
Could either of these be the cause or is it something else? Any help is of course greatly appreciated.

That could be either a grounding issue or it could be that your coil is over-coupled I had both of those issues recently try raising the secondary an inch or so to reduce coupling

As I have said the RF gounding could be a problem. since my current ground, for want of a better one, is a simply steel rod driven, not even a foot into the ground.
However I find it unlikly to be over coupled, having a 2'' secondary and a flat primary. Javatc says that it is at 0.102K and recomends 0.125K.
