I am looking at making Steve Ward's mini SSTC as my first coil, but with a few changes. I have made half bridges for driving flyback transformers, but i want to be sure that these changes will work before ordering everything.
I plan to power the half bridge of mosfets (IRFP260N) with the 48v line of a huge server power supply i got a while back, and wasn't too sure if there was any significant changes i needed to make. Mainly, would I need to change C7/8 to higher capacitances due to the lower supply voltage? The power supply can supply 15.6A at 48v filtered DC.
Also, what do the 'cap sub point' and 'resistor sub point' mean. I think this just indicates a resistor and capacitor have to be added here to set the frequency range of the 555 output, but please correct me if I'm wrong.
Any help is greatly appreciated, as this is my first coil. Thanks, Nic.

48VDC will not give you a impressive power output compared to using rectified mains voltage. There are other SSTC designs outthere for lower voltages that work much better.
IRFP460 are pretty cheap and work well for higher bus voltages.
You are right about the capacitor and resistor sub points.

If you're willing to spend some money on this coil, then you might as well spend $50 on an unenclosed variac from eBay and make a wooden box for it (that's what I did when I started experimenting with SSTCs). However, 48V should be enough for a few inches of spark length, so if that's all you're aiming for, then your current supply will work.
<- The sparks you see in my profile picture are 9" - 10" discharges made using a half bridge of IRFP460s and my cheap variac.

Im fairly tight with money at the moment, but i would probly look at doing that later when i have more experience. I think I'll make the coil, run it on 48v, and maybe look at switching to rectified mains (240v) when I'm comfortable. I think i'll replace the IRFP260's with 460's to hande the higher voltage.
