In some Teslathon pictures, I noted the tables are covered in aluminum foil.
Is this just protection of the (wood) tables against strikes or does this have a meaning beyond, e.g. to lower the fres? If so, by how much could this lower fres (just some examples, experiences)?
I am trying to figure out, if I should do the same - however, I am far away from having spark length to jump down to the table, so it's only making sense if it has another meaning.

Some people use it to measure what the coil is doing, sort of like an antenna. It can be used with an oscilloscope to get a pretty good measurement. Being under the coil it usually will not affect the free of the coil. Maybe someone else can add some input as well.

Instead of (just) asking I probably should have switched on my brain:
I now looked up the formula for plate model capacitors: C = epsilon * A / d (with A being the size of the plates and d being the distance).
Given that, the aluminum size should make a significant difference, if the coil is on an non-conducting table. If one considers the concrete floor to be the one plate, and the flat projection of the topload the other plate, it should easily make a factor 2 in topload capacity. OK, that's a significant simplification, I know, and eventually neither is the concrete floor a good conductor nor is the wood a good non-conductor. Some result should be visible, if the aluminum is earthed (which it better be).
Opinions?
EDIT: I should simply try it - but I am lazy now. Perhaps during the weekend.
