Does the buck converter modulating a QCW DRSSTC have to be a synchronous buck? I see that both Steve Ward and Eric Goodchild use one.

Well it doesn't have to be synchronous. But if you use a regular buck you have to have some method to bring the voltage back down after a burst or when the OCD trips. If you don't do this the bridge will turn on with voltage on the bus and this can be catastrophic for your IGBTs.
A sync buck automatically brings voltage back down and recycles it back into the bulk C because of it's low side switch. A sync buck also can be more efficient then a regular one if built and tuned correctly.
