I've built a flame thrower:

I still need to add a HV spark auto igniter. The problem is that I need something small, to keep the weight down. Currently the device is very portable and lightweighed. Probably something with a SCR or a spark gap or even a neon bulb , to discharge an invertor powered capacitor into a HV coil. Like Hotwired built, here: Link2

UK members beware!

Firearms Act 1968 section 5, part 1(b)

Teenager made his own "flame thrower"
Lancashire Telegraph
Wednesday 11th April 2007

A teenager who made a flame thrower as an experiment has been given a suspended sentence.

The Judge at Preston crown court said that Timothy Briggs, 18, had been stupid rather than calculating.

Judge Pamela Badley gave him 40 weeks' custody suspended for 12 months.

She told him: "Anyone found with weapons of this sort can expect a long sentence. It is only the particular circumstances of your case which allow the court to treat you in this exceptionally lenient fashion."

Briggs pleaded guilty to possession of a prohibited weapon, an offence under the Firearms Act.

His arrest followed information that a flame thrower had been discharged from a window of the teenager's flat in Woodvale, Darwen.

He lived on the top floor of the block.

The suspended sentence order will involve twelve months supervision and 180 hours unpaid work.

And not a word on the technical part? You seem more interested in the legal aspects lately.

I always thought a society without politicians and lawyers would be better, wouldn't you agree?

Proud Mary's point is valid on a 'responsible' forum such as this.

Maybe if you gave some indication of your intended use for it?.....

Your absolutley right Radhoo, those brits just dont know how little freedom of life they have, since they turned to the big socialized/communized kind of governement.

I would think that Proud Mary's big governement is much more dangerous to humanity than Radhoo's flame thrower.

libertarians unite !

I would like to see more technical details on this thread though, Radhoo.

I've been building flame and explosive appartuses, detonating things, even a tank, yes... in a military training site next to home... it didn't blow in the sense of words but made a sound which alerted all the surroundings in a 5km range dur to the resonating steel sound

made fumigenes, made electrical parasitics, blew many things, generated RF noise at different power which must have disturbed every radio receptor in a wide range

never had cops, never was bothered

belgium, you know... ;)

but I agree on one thing, such a device can be built to prove a design, or even for fun, but should not be conserved intact and portable as it is a weapon, and instructions on how to build one should not be posted on youtube...

@Ash Small: the device is intended to offer protection against the Carpathian brown bear. I am leaving for a "wild" trip, and I never know what comes in my path. Also pepper spray and an electric fence perimeter to protect my tent at night.
I must add that the many x-ray experiments performed by members of this forum are by far more dangerous than this device can ever be.

@Patrick: this flame thrower currently has some pressure regulation issues. The fuel comes both as liquid and gas, depending on how the yellow reservoir is oriented. As a quick solution, I added a small vaporization chamber, but on continuous use, its temperature drops so much, that it preserves the incoming fuel in liquid state. Weight: little under 1Kg. Range: 1.5 m max. Sound: terrifying.

@shrad: looks like you're having a lot of fun.

How long before a pressurized can of contact cleaner, or WD-40 and a BIC lighter are made illegal then?
