Hey, I just got two mots and I am planning on using one of them for a project that I am working on.
I need 35 mA at about 2Kv and also at least 2.4A at 12.6v in output.
I am planning on running the secondary's output through a 0.09uF cap to limit it (no voltage doubler) and the other secondary will heat a vacuum tube filament so both of the ouputs will be limited.
however I am going to have to remove the shunts to have enough room to rewind the ''extra'' secondary so that it is the correct voltage.
I am not going to be using any ballast on the primary, but I am not trying to get extra power from it. the shunts are just in the way.
Is there some reason that this is a horrible idea that is going to kill me? I have never used an MOT before.

Use a second smaller transformer from radio shack, for the 2.4A, 12.6V filament winding, theres no need to alter a MOT and expose yourself to danger, just to have one transformer for both functions.
