i've always wanted to see one made as a spiral. if you want dramatic, make the ladder into a plasma speaker that plays epic music as the arc travels lol.

A small amount of capacitance (100s of pf) on a JL can make it considerably louder and more crackly due to the increased current when the arc strikes on each half-cycle, but you need to be careful to avoid it being high enough to resonate with the secondary as this may cause the transformer insulation to break down

Series capacitors just make the arcs sound more "angry", the sound has louder harmonics if you want to be technical. But it still hums at the mains frequency.
