Hi everyone,

I built a nice, three foot tall Vann de Graaff generator in my garage. While operating it one day, I was surprised to find that it would open and close my Genie automatic garage door at random . Pretty quirky, I thought. But then, when I was done for the day, I found that the Genie would no longer work with the wall switch or the remote! I had blown it out! How can this be? Do Van de Graaff generators emit some R.F.? Replacing the Genie was not fun!

Thanks!

The VDG produces sparks, and sparks emit a lot of RF. Depending on where you put the VDG it may have sparked to wiring going to the damaged device, what is almost sure destruction.

every time i make flyback arcs on my desk, my computer mouse 'disconnects' until i unplug it and plug it back in. I think i've done permanent damage, as i'm constantly 'double' clicking stuff now.
