Hi, I'm having trouble drawing arcs from a single MOT. Phasing is obviously not the issue, and I have checked the secondary with a voltmeter and at about 35V input I get 200V out. ?? Whats going on here?

Thanks

have you tried running it straight off of mains?

yeah its on a variac so I've pumped it up to 120V quite a few times now and cant draw more than a really crappily made flyback. I have another MOT primary in series because when I connected it without a ballast it blew my 20A fuse??

This is ridiculous.

maybe you have a short in the primary of the first one. try hooking up the second mot and see if it works better.

Is the secondary of the MOT you are using for a ballast shorted? If not your power throughput will be seriously limited.

Yes, I left the secondary OC. That is where the problem most likely lies. Just how does the power throughput increase with a shorted secondary? Does the transformer saturate when the secondary is SC allowing higher current through?

Thanks a lot

When the secondary is open circuited only the magnetizing reactance is providing a current path. When the secondary is short circuited, you will be limiting the current with the leakage reactance, which is much lower than the magnetizing reactance.

http://ece.mst.edu/documents/class_exp/ee_209labs/Experiment_5_Single-Phase_Transformers.pdf has a decent description in the first four pages.

It sounds like a short on the primary to me. I have drawn unballasted arcs from a MOT without blowing a 15A fuse.
