Is it only candle flames that do this?

Detonation nanodiamond - using TNT etc - has been produced in noisy laboratory syntheses, but for those not yet hard of hearing, nanodiamonds can also be formed by ultrasonic cavitation in colloidal graphite, and, I believe there is also laser ablation for the pulse minded.

Heh.
Thats an interesting reference Proud Mary, have you tried this yet?
I have some lubricating graphite here which I was using for my conductive adhesive experiments..

Possible interesting hack, sodium metasilicate + colloidal carbon + ultrasound, for nanoscale SiC production?

Here's a creaking English translation of a Russian paper:

Olga V. Lavrinenko, Alexander L. Vereshchagin, Genadiy V. Leonov Research of the High Intensity Acoustic Fields Influence on the Carbon-containing Media Link2

And this one by the same authors is bigger on details of the cavitation apparatus:

Method of Obtaining the Carbonic Phase Ultradispersed Particles in the Ultrasonic Cavitation Process Link2

Producing sounds easier than detecting, unless you've got access to a SEM, or a classy X-ray diffractometer.
