Hello everybody, quick question here. I have searched the internet many times but cannot seem to find any information regarding this. How do you wire a bridge rectifier and two large electrolytic capacitors together with mains input from a variac to make a voltage doubler without having to use an isolation transformer in order to obtain a center tap? According to the schematic here, the centerpoint of the two series capacitors is connected to the center tap of the transformer. I am pretty sure that a bridge doubler can be made without having to have a transformer to provide a center tap because Steve Ward's DRSSTC1 uses a bridge rectifier based voltage doubler but nowhere does it say anything about a transformer and the pictures show the doubler arrangement connected directly to the mains.

Center taps would be used for full-wave doublers/multipliers. You want to build a half-wave doubler. It is outlined on this page:
