I have tried boiling in mineral spirits (almost a light oil?) to little success. The heat gun method works if done correctly. However, it will make the cores extremely brittle.

I found careful temperature control and patience with a heat gun can get them apart after about 10 minutes at a low temperature (don't remember the number, but way below 400C). I just set the heat gun about a foot away and did some other work, and when I went back to pick it up the cores were apart. Although, I have a small sample size - did it once, and it worked, so maybe I got lucky.
