Hi, I use my camera to record long videos (1 hour or longer), then I speed the video up many times to make a "time lapse" video. However a standard software just drops the frames which results in a low-quality video with noise. Do you know any software which can actually average more frames into one, to eliminate noise?

I have a friend how does lots of time lapse things and he just takes a photo every so often. Not sure what software he uses but it works well. I'll see if I can find out for you.

Thanks, I might know a software which makes video out of photos, but my camera can't be configured to take photos in predefined intervals (even if it could, I think the shutter would wear out quickly). I just have a standart 30fps video which is ~1 hour long, and I want to make a 2 minute long 30fps video out of it by averaging every x frames into one (or by averaging x frames then dropping y frames).

I did this time lapse video a few months ago:

But I used separate shots (pictures) to create it.

I'd use avisynth, a temporal noise reduction filter, then a frame rate decimation. Or for really high reduction ratios, a decimation, then temporal filter, then a final decimation, to improve performance.

As for the time lapse with a camera, if you can get an inexpensive Canon camera supported by CHDK, you can get either use the builtin intervalometer (much more flexible than Canon's) or write a ubasic script for even more control.

grythumn, thanks. There is a CHDK beta for my camera but I couldn't persuade it to load it (can't find the "Firm Update" menu option). But anyways, does the interval function open and close the shutter every time? Cause that would wear it out quickly.

On my camera (an old S3IS), to enable CHDK for the first time you need a specially formatted SD card, with the card latch in the write protect position, and turn the camera on in playback, not recording, mode.

Be careful with locking the shutter open; I've heard of people damaging the CCD when imaging the sun or other very bright sources. This thread suggests you are not the first to ask, but it sounds like they haven't figured out how to lock the mechanical shutter open. The mechanical shutter lifetime is on the order of 100k exposures, but may vary widely.

If you don't need the full camera resolution, you might want to look into the CHDK PTP work; you can read the preview ram at any desired interval without tripping the shutter. This works on even fewer cameras, though. I tried hacking in support for my S3IS but I must've found the wrong function entry points as it just locked up the camera.
