zvs driver fails when transformer core not inserted?

hey,

i have tried (twice) to remove the flyback transformer, from the coil in the zvs driver, and when powered up, one of the zeners immediately short circuits, thus allowing the full current from the battery to flow to the coil, this ruins all possibility of using it as an induction heater. why does this happen? :/

You could leave the core in, wind a few turns for the secondary, and run the output to your work coil.
by adding more primary turns than secondary turns you could keep the circuit happy while having high output current.

thats wierd, I've made an induction heater out of a ZVS flyback driver before. I used a 10+10 coil instead of the 5+5 for FBT

I would think a smaller resonant capacitor would be better. The higher the frequency, the higher the impedance per unit of L.

It is definitely doable, i have done it, though it worked better with an impedance matching transformer. But Vasil made a higher voltage ZVS driver used as a sstc, which (obviously) used an air cored primary. However, this was higher inductance, i think he used 5+5 turns but the diameter was much larger than any IH would use. Either try more turns, or use an impedance matching transformer with something like the 5+5 turns for the primary, and however many turns on the secondary needed to more or less match the impedance of the work coil. Try something like 2 turns and work up from there to get the best performance.

The higher the frequency, the more trouble have the gate resistor to switch the gates fast enough. The basic zvs driver doesn't work well above ~100-150 kHz, so calculate your L and C from this.

You want a matching transformer anyway; otherwise you'll have sad FETs as they try to switch 100A.

bwang: In theory, in this circuit the FETs should switch only the real power, the reactive power circulates between the primary and capacitor. So with no workpiece inserted, the FETs should switch only the current required to cover losses in the L and C.
