A 16 stage multiplier sounds insane. Would the caps need to be rated for the output?

no, they'd only need to be rated for the input voltage peak. that's the beauty of CW multipliers.

Is that Vp or Vp-p?
What sort of capacitance would I need? I cant find any information about current output...

Nowadays no one who wanted a 2kV DC supply capable of producing several hundreds of milliamps would try to rectify an HV transformer output at 50 or 60 Hz, precisely because of the very large and expensive capacitors needed to attenuate the ripple voltage to a useable value at these low frequencies.

What you really need is an SMPS operating at 50 kHz, rather than 50 Hz, to bring the size of the reservoir capacitor down to realistic proportions. Moreover, at 50 kHz, not only will the residual ripple be above human hearing, but so will the intermodulation products generated by the mixing of the ripple frequency with your audio modulation i.e. (f1 - f2)(f1 + f2).

That is a good point, but I think the cost of designing and building such a thing would much more than buying $30 of 100 uf 450 volt capacitors. In fact, I myself would use Hg rectifiers (for coolness and ruggedness) and a large inductor, such has a MOT. Hg rectifiers and caps over 10 uf = BOOM
