hmm, I'm feeling very Chinese right now:
http://www.cnet.com.au/software/internet/0,39029524,40063860,00.htm?feed=rss

internet censorship: you pay for it whether you use it or not,
"ISPs will be rebated if they choose to offer filtering at a service provider level."

I agree with the first (and only?) comment:
READER COMMENT:
"There are two reasons why this is a bad idea. One much more serious than the other.

Kids who want to look at porn will always find a way, and protection measures like this are inherently weak. This is really a huge waste of money.

The second and much more serious issue is the problem of false positives. No filtering system can be 100% accurate. Kids and teens who want information on things like safer sex, STI's, their body, pregnancy, etc are going to be brick walled by these systems which will label such information as inappropriate."

True. And who is now liable for false negatives? If e.g. a m^H religious person is offended by the displaying of e.g. a naked ankle, is the ISP liable for the failure of the filter software? Should the ISP now pay compensation?

Rubbish, rubbish, rubbish.

What is happening to Australia?

It's interesting to note that they are considering it for the 4th time. Did they not understand the answer from the first 3 times?
"According to the minister's spokeswoman, almost no ISPs currently offer any kind of content filtering, so the government will study the feasibility of ISP-level filtering for a fourth time. "

Censorship and demonizing "indecency" is the new wave of conservative government control. In the US, the FCC recently raised the fines (per incident) of "indeceny" from $32,500 per incident to $325,000 per incident, up to $3,000,000 cap per broadcaster, per day.

The sad thing is the government in the US REFUSES to definine indecency so fines are being passed out for unwritten territory. It is a coverall term that can apply to your basic profanity, sexual terminology, sexual acts, among others. You cannot even use slang terms or alternate terms that even hint to the aforementioned topics.

No other monetary punishment on the law books fines you as severely...because we all know saying "pecker" on the air is the most cruel, inhuman, and terrible thing you can do as a human being and they'd rather have you go out and stab a dog in the face with a kitchen knife because that's only a $5000 fine.

Censorship and/or spin itself has been around forever in media and government propaganda, but it seems like the Internet is the last frontier free from it and it's finally being nibbled away at. However, the Internet is too big to control by any one government(s). Even in China, you can get around the censorship issues if you wanted to bad enough. They even publicly state and provide uncensored Internet but the connections are purposely lagged.

Just thought I'd wish those of you across the pond a happy July the 4th.
Congratulations on another aniversary of being the "land of the free".
BTW, Cesium sponge, since I'm not in US jurisdiction can I just say "pecker!" gratuitously?

Don't get me wrong I'm not sure my Govt. (or the Ausies' for that matter) is any better; I'm just joking about the irony.

Well, looking on the bright side, when the Chinese invade in 20 years time, you'll hardly notice the difference wink
