im thinking, should we control it off a ICL8038 function generator IC?

I know absolutely nothing about IC's, although I've read elsewhere that the ICL8038 is discontinued, but a few vendors still have some old stock.

Someone on another forum suggested using an AD5932 as a replacement, which is programmable, but others here recommend the TL494, which seems pretty simple to use.

I'm still reading up on ballast inductors and series resonant circuits. I know a bit about parallel resonant circuits, but I've not used series resonance before, but it seems fairly straightforward.

yes saddly they are discontinued but i managed to get myself 10 for about £5 on ebay :D

iits very simple to use too, and i have no knowlage of resonance at all its confusing, the AD5932 is a interesting IC but from my POV it looks rather complex to use

You'll want to use a TL494, which is specifically meant for this sort of application (SMPS control). After all, all you need is a simple square wave.

I'm inclined to agree with you here, Bwang, although there is an argument for introducing dead-time. The waveforms in the diagram I posted regarding series resonance and 'soft switching' has four different square waves attached. That came from a fairly technical paper, so maybe it warrants 'some' consideration.

Personally, I'm in favour of keeping things as simple as possible (I was hoping to avoid using IC's completely, although it does make sense to use an IC for this application) but it may make sense to use the ICL8038 if it is suitable, and if you have several 'lying around'.

Large ferrite coes?
Suitable coil formers (bobbins)?
Enamelled wire?
Suitable IGBT's?
GDT cores?
A 'scope if you don't already have one?

Steve Ward has an excellent ferrite transformer design here: Link2
Very worth looking at...though IDK how much power he eventually pushed his bridge to.

Digikey has some STGW40N120KD's for £3.23 each. They look suitable, and cheap. Plenty in stock as well.

EBay has some HGTG30N69B3D's at $24.99 for a rail or 30...best price/IGBT I know of right now.
