A long time ago I made a Flyback SGTC, it work well, I got ~6 inch streamers. I think a major problem with efficiency was my Leyden jar caps. I wanted to make another SGTC with better homemade capacitors.
I rolled a capacitor using wax paper as the dielectric and tin foil for the plates. I double layered the wax paper which is 1 ¾ inch wide and used a single layer of tinfoil about ½ an inch wide. It can store 10.3 nf and so far works up to +15KDC. The spark it makes when shorted it a very small pop and is quiet, all so it doesn’t seem to hold a charge.
When I connect a wire to one lead and hold a wire near the other lead it will arc, after that I disconnect it and short both lead and there is no discharge. I tested a very old glass bottle cap that was rusted and only measured .2nf and I got almost ½ sparks, what’s the deal?

Check with a multimeter the resistance. Check for high ranges. Maybe the leakage resistance is high enough for it to discharge partially in a few seconds.

Sorry i made a mistake, the was paper was breaking down. I was using a homemade transformer during my testing, so the voltage was much lower. I will remake it with 3m overhead projection sheets and post hopefully good results.

Probably would help if i used a DC flyback (face palm) I was using my mini one that i assumed it had built in diodes. I tested older rolled caps that i thought where garbage turned out they work just fine. My goal is to make long lasting nice clean looking caps that after dipped in wax for insulation will be dipped in plastidip for a better look.

tested them with a un-tuned mini coil, the wax paper one held up for about 5 min and then shorted and was destroyed by ozone breakdown, the other ones i made from the projector sheets look good and dont seem to produce ozone. I will tune the coli a little more and make a video. Hopefully i can get these to the point where there are reliable enough to make in a bigger setup.
