Maybe...maybe you could spin the thing really fast and then slam on the brakes to generate an edge for an induction launcher.

edit: hmmm, the current would probably melt the coil before you got it up to speed though - if you could even turn it.

As soon as we get room temperature superconductors these generators will be everywhere. The peak current would be extraordinary! The only limit I can see would be the bearings if they are conducting the power although, the liquid metal conductor spray solves that.

I don`t think it`s quite that simple though. The critical current, above which superconductivity is lost, is not as great as you might imagine for current superconductors. The advantage for things like electromagnets is that the lack of resistance allows more windings to be packed in, increasing the field.
This is not really an option for a homopolar generator so I`m not sure superconductors are that big a help in this case.

I know very little about these devices, but got the impression from the Blamey paper that the Australian University homopolar generator represents the high water mark of the art.

It was built during the Golden Age of (British) Atmospheric A-Bomb Testing in Australia. The paper makes clear that the work could not be contracted out (i.e. it was secret) - and some parts of the construction - the working of vast iron ingots - was performed by a naval shipyard.

Expense was not the issue it would be for fundamental nuclear research today.

Here's a homopolar motor. Two questions are:

How does Ohms Law describe the speed control?

If you spun the motor backwards to the direction
it revolves, would it recharge the power source?
