Many thanks forty. I also noticed looking at uzzors circuit that he uses a 500V or so MOSFET, i assume that he would use a lower voltage than that if it wasn't necessary. So obviously my transistor will have to handle approximately the output voltage right? If this is the case the TIP31 will blow as its max voltage rating is 40V... I found some IRF630 MOSFETS (i assume they are MOSFETS?) in a old CRT, would these work? Correct me if I am completely wrong here.

Yes, the voltage rate of the MOSFET must be equal or higher than the output of the converter-charger. According to the IRF630 MOSFET datasheet, the maximum source-to-drain voltage is 200VDC. So, if you are planning to use it in a boost converter and let it reach higher output voltage than 200VDC , it will simply blow up (it has happened to me many times before i realize it. Better get some IRFP450 MOSFET. They can handle 500VDC (source-to-drain).

I have looked around for some of those, but as I live in NewZealand we have very few good electronics stores and unfortunatly I have not been able to find them. Should I order some online? Or are there any other good newzealander out there that know soem good stores? Oh and by the way I got it working again, The capactitor C2 had lost its capacitance (shorted?) and the transformer was busted. So i've replaced them and it's working beutifully (if a bit slow). I think i won't bother to convert it to a boost converter, i'll just build a whole new curcuit. As I need it for my science fair inh a few days. ( can't afford an tinkering at the moment.) Many thanks!

Well, here in Greece we have less electronic stores than you have there. That is the reason i always buy "difficult" electronic components from Ebay (MOSFETS, capacitors, IGBTS etc) and have a pile of junk for the rest. Two months ago i bought 2 IRFP450 MOSFETS from Ebay for 2$ (including shipping from China - brand new) for my booster charger. So, in my opinion and if you can't find them around, better get them online.
Nice project! Hope you can finish it for your science fair.
