When I first saw the pictures of that cave I thought it was fake and that the people had been put in with photoshop.
It is incredible and I wish I could go and see it.
What puzzles me is that the story is about 4 years old.

I've never seen anything that even approaches it, crystal-wise.

They are right to make it a world heritage site, because we might wait a very long time before anything like it is discovered again.

I understand that a totally accurate replica of one of the Stone Age art caves in France has been made, because the condensation of visitor's breath had begun to decompose the ancient pigments, and introduced alien micro flora and fauna into the cave.

Mexico is a very poor country, so unless strong measures are taken to conserve the cave, it will be broken up and sold bit by bit to tourists and malefactors. Perhaps it could be virtualized, so people could visit the unique subterranean environment without interacting with it in any way.

What sucks is the fact that they can only be down there for 10 minutes because of the natural spring, too hot. But yeah, that would truly be something amazing to see in person, prity surprise how huge they are, specially the large ones that are just one huge solid piece instead of multiple fragments.

The pictures make it look like the people have been shrunk to microscopic size and placed on a small rock...

There is amazing hd video of something looking just like that in the BBC`s `Planet Earth` documentary. It may even be the same cave. Amazing stuff.

This story with pics is in today's Mail Online "EDITOR'S SIX OF THE BEST" selection, but I think Bored Chemist is right that the story has been re-heated, a commonplace of UK tabloid practice.

But it deserves showing to new people anyhow.

I see that gypsum (calcium sulphate) crystals are very soft, so will need special protection.
