Exactly! The dwell angle is just another way of saying "duty cycle".

So, what this all boils down to (I think) is, if I want a "powerful" arc (and not necessarily a LONG arc) then driving my flyback with a symetrical square-wave from a half-bridge made up of two MOSFETS is the right way to go.

Thanks to everyone for your input! smile

I thought I was saying the opposite of what you were saying, X Ray.

( I do generally appreciate your posts, though. You are very knowledgable about a lot of stuff)

From my flyback, current through my 30T primary...

1311396828 2431 FT1630 Currentpulse
Current pulse, zoomed in. 6.6V means 6.6V / 0.5Ohms = 13.2 amps Pk.

i think im putting in 181-224 W average into the primary, but i need some better measurements.

That's a ferfect looking sawtooth (almost TOO perfect!). I'm surprised that there's no resonant ringing in the waveform. Shouldn't we see ringing, or is it only the voltage waveform that rings?

Ash -- I think we are talking about the same thing, only looking at it from two different perspectives.

Thanks for your kind words. I consider myself a "jack of all trades, expert at none". I know a little about a lot of things, only because I've been around for a while. wink

You are obviously very knowledgable, and an asset to this forum. I hope that you continue contributing to it for a long time to come.

Ahhh... Good point! But it's really not the driving bridge that determines whether you get more voltage or more power, but it's the driving waveform. Right?

Frequency plays a large role in determining voltage/current. Higher frequencies will give more current yet lower voltages (to a certain point) while lower frequencies do the opposite (to a certain point).

Waveforems have a large impact too, with square waves giving much higher voltages than sines. A flyback fed a sine will operate as a standard transformer and allow a lot of power to flow, yet when fed a square or a sawtooth they operate in flyback mode as you know, generating higher voltages.

Honest, thats a real waveform! I was suprised by how clean it was ill check it agin with my Tek ...
