hi guys,
i just had a idea, what if we compile aa list of all the usful ics we use the most and a breif description of what they do? (if you notice any dupes of a IC in this post tell me ;D)
Timers and PWM IC’s
555Timer, a multi-functional timer that can operate at various duty cycles, can run monostable mode and astable mode. 556 Dual 555 timer.
TL494, Switchmode Pulse Width Modulation Control Circuit a 16 pin magical IC with internal error amplifiers, a 1-200khz oscillator, a 5v reference output, deadtime control, and dual output transistors. (useful for anything requiring PWM) KA7500 Updated version of the TL494
SG3525, similar to TL494, outputs can directly drive a transistor or a small GDT
ICL8038, Function Generator IC (note: not made any more BUT eBay have some good prices!) XR2206 - monolithic function generator chip (sort of like the one you guys were talking about, except still made)
Operational Amplifiers
LM741, single op amp an 8 pin, powered ic with a single operational amplifier that outputs the greatly multiplied difference between two input signals (useful when slight voltage variations need to be detected, such as with optical sensors)
LM358, Dual version of the LM741
LM324, Quad version of the LM741
OPA129, ultra low bias electrometer amp
OP177, ultra precision op amp a close second.
ICL7650S, chopper stabilized op amp
LM319, fast op-amp
Comparators and Logic Gates
LM393, dual comparator an 8 pin, powered ic with two independent comparators each of which
Can compare two voltages and change its output to indicate which is higher (useful for capacitor charge indication and for active voltage regulation)

TL494: the beloved PWM/SMPS driver IC. UCC37321/2: Inverting and noninverting 9A gate drives with enable. 74HC109: Dual JK flip flop, the heart of most DRSSTC controllers. TC4421/2: TO-220-5 9A gate drives, better heatsinking than UCC's but no enable 74HC14: Hex inverter IXDD-6xx series: the IXYS/Clare gate drive series, up to 30A. CD4046: PLL IC

The GR4 MM3R chip that you connect between the keyboard and the PC which removes spurious apostrophes from thread titles.
Actually, if I remember correctly, it is appropriate to use an apostrophe for abbreviations. I always use one when I type 'photo's' as it is an abbreviation of 'photographs'

OPA129 ultra low bias electrometer amp is my fave rave of today, with OP177 ultra precision op amp a close second. I have a soft spot for ICL7650S chopper stabilized op amp too
I sometimes get into a mindset of using particular parts, and send off for a roll of them, and then forget why I wanted them, or what they are for. As a result, I am constantly surprised by finding things I didn't know I had.

ICL8038 Fuction Generator IC, to bad there not made anymore.
A real golden oldie - a whole signal generator on a chip! Great if you can find some at a good price.
hmm ive found some, the reason i started this thread is to try and work out the leectronics components i should order for quick projects i may want to make

is £5.82 for 5 of them a good deal?
thx tom
Yeah a little over a dollar for each is real good, i think. Im sure others will disagree.
EDIT: OOPs, i didnt see the british pound symbol, i thought you were quoting communist Euro's well 2 USD for each is a bit steep but since there rare, 11 USD id jump on them, Tom.
