I was wondering, what are yalls opinions on giving up on things?
And don't just give the "never give up B.S." (if you are going to, give reasoning).

But honestly, we've all given up on things before, usually we regret it, but at what point do you think that it's more acceptable to give up on something and cut your losses than it is to keep going?

Recently I hit a stumbling block (more like ran headfirst into a cement wall), and seriously considered giving up, but being me I stood up, shook off the concussion, and decided to keep running headfirst towards the finish line.
Theres other reasons I'm making this too, fusor comes to mind, but this thread isn't about me, it's about you, and your thoughts on giving up, so please post your thoughts on giving up, both idealistically and realistically, stories are welcome.

Have at.

After 8 years of piano lessons I quit, everyone told me I was going to regret it, do I? Not really. It's been 4 years and I haven't had the slightest inclination to go back

On the other hand, I biked to school everyday of my freshmen year of high school (even in winter) except after spring break I gave up riding my bike for the bus. I do regret that decision because my original goal was to bike to school everyday of freshmen year, no exceptions.

I guess the moral of the story is that you should look at all the possible outcomes first, before you make a decision. I.E if I hadn't started playing piano in the first place I wouldn't have spent countless hours practicing and such

You mention fusor. Most of my threads on here (while they might not always seem like it) are geared towards this end (RF/magnetron ion sources/plasma generation, HV supplies,etc.). I've also collected most of the hardware (vacuum system, materials for HV feedthrough, etc.).

Whether I'll ever get round to ordering deuterium and neuton detectors is another question, though.

There are plenty of other uses for the same 'basic' setup (accelerators, plasma coating, etc).

I used SGTC technology to build an HF TIG welder, but I've no real desire to build a TC. (I admire the work of others, but I've other priorities. I might get round to it one day.)

I also accepted a challenge to build a moving coil meter.

While 'priorities' may change, channelling your 'energy and resources' into a new project, or new direction, isn't quite the same as 'giving up' on other projects that may no longer be relevant, or that you have already learned from, it's just 'changing priorities'.

While I won't 'give up' on the meter (I accepted a challenge, and I now have some magnets, not the ones I wanted, but they will allow me to make some progress, but my priority at present is my rectifier project), and I'll never 'give up' on projects in general, priorities can change.

It's a question of deciding what your priorities are, and the best route to achieving them at any given time (this will change, depending on circumstance and experience, etc.).
