help needed for a buck converter

so im suppose to use a mosfet that doesn't have an internal diode that goes from source to drain? or else it will heat up?

No you just use a method that stops the internal Diode from conducting (at least for now to see if this is the cuase of your unexplained heat), in short keep that zener reversede biased, and under its breakover voltage. !!!


Let me see... the datasheet says... Vsd = 1.3 V, if thats at 4 or 10 amps that could be the reason for so much heat.

UPDATE: Given the above pic... i think you need a diode between the mosfet and inductor, with the polarity arranged so that the inductor back EMF cant get to the mosfet (reversed biased horizontal diode) but then the Back EMF gets conducted through the vertical diode (forward biased) and to the load, i think this will solve your heat problems.

Look above for the update... Im thinking more and more that the Drain-Source Zener is the problem.

Let me simulate this on MultiSIM 10... BRB [Well crap on a stick, i dont have MultiSIM on this computer...]

you mean liek this? it still heats up and the halogen lamp is not nearly as bright as before angry

im at a lost too.
but look on the bright side, im powering a 0.2A load and its not heating up anymore :)

We need to know more about the V and I of the mosfet, thats the key.

Canyou reduce the On time of the duty cyccle below 50% ? maybe 40% on is good then lets see what heat is made?

at around 30% duty cycle the current through 12v supply and drain is 1.3A, voltage at source relative to ground is 7 volts
