Best car batteries for server backup?

It simply seems ludicrous to try to build a backup system for unreliable grid power, by using unreliable batteries.

I agree, I have been researching and reading about deep cycle batteries because of this informative thread and I may never buy another automotive type starter battery again. I am convinced that whatever small difference in price there may be, it is going to be worth it.

The thing is the difference in price isn't so "small". The local scrap yard has plenty of group 31 <2 y/o car batteries that stand up fine to drain testing and have a terminal voltage in excess of 12.4 on sale for $25. New deep cycles on the other hand... are bit more of a pain in the wallet.
