So I now have nearly everything for my first VTTC; wire, caps, transformers, variac, etc. But I'm having trouble getting a 100w 5k wire wound resistor, I've tried eBay but no one has any values over a couple hundred Ohms, nothing near the 5k I need. I considered winding my own I would need a lot of nichrome wire for that (say a couple hundred metres?). Any suggestions? I'm in Australia if that is useful

Secondly, L4 in the schematic is wound over a 30R resistor, what kind of wattage should it be? I'm guessing >50w. I also see a slight problem with this, if I have a bigger or a smaller resistor the value of L4 would change dramaticly. Any ideas to what sort of inductance it should be?

Cheers

Link2 And you can heatsink it :P It isn't variable, but you could use different capacitor values instead.

The inductor and resistor are a HF filter. It helps keep any ringing out of the tube. The ideal inductance depends on the frequency, but it isn't particularly important. You don't need to wind the inductor over the resistor, just try to make it close to Steve's just to be safe. The resistor wattage isn't important, it won't be dissipating much.

Download, I have some 5k 50 watt resistors. With some parallel and series magic I think you could get the right number..

I imagine a resistor covered in aluminium won't be very good above 1kV. With the inductor though, will a little 10w wire wound do?

Inducktion - How much do you want for them? I imagine 50w should be fine if I keep the running time low anyway. I don't have the money to build a Staccato anyway so I'll have to

Alright, I won't bother with that resistor and just use an inductor wound on a piece of PVC or something.

I found a 15k, 225 watt on eBay, any problems with that?

Edit:

I've found a dirt cheap 75k resistor, might be too high though

I found 10x 51k 90w resistors for $25

Sounds like a good deal, I can run them in parallel and get a large number of values

If I have 10 I can butcher one and try make it variable
