After a long while off of 4hv I have finally figured out my problems with my version of Steve Ward's Mini SSTC5. Here is a link to my original thread I knew very little about electronics when I first started this project, but have come a long way since. I went through several different driver boards and many blown components as well as a few different size secondary coils to figure out what works best. I think I have made a big improvement with this coil. Here are some spark pictures And the beefy bridge (Way overkill for such a small coil) Movie And I was even able to audio modulate it with an arduino
I modified Steve's schematic and printed a proper board with ExpressPCB, a very easy program to use in my opinion.
The main problems I had with this coil was not having the correct GDT core material, my control transformer was too small and my bridge design was very sloppy.

Ah yes, I forgot to post the specs. The secondary is 3" by 7" wound with #30, Fres is around 580KHz. Double stacked John Freau toroids Power side is 120v wall outlet at around 9A, so just over 1000Watts. This goes into a variac that ups it to 140v and then into a step up transformer for a final voltage of 275VAC ~ 388VDC buss voltage into a halfbridge of IXGN60N60C2D1 IGBT's. Like I said, a little overkill for such a small coil.
