I have a very small DC flyback from a 5" black-and-white TV. I don't really want it (I have a few larger ones), so I was wondering how I should go about taking it apart to get the ferrite core. I had no clue where to start, but I read online that I can put it into boiling water to dissolve/melt the glue. I'm not sure if this is the proper first step, so could someone experienced in transformer disassembly help me out?

the ferrite also isn't hard to break. it requires roughly the same amount of elbow grease. i've found soaking ferrite transformers in acetone for a couple hours in a glass jar works great for getting them apart without breaking them.

To remove the cores on mine was too easy. The metal clip holding the core together had 2 glue spots. on on top, one on bottom. I just used a knife to cut through the glue (took a little work) and removed the clips. The core then fell out on its own.
Guess all 24 flybacks i owned were too easy to remove the core =)

oh thats cool (and lucky). i've had a bunch of mine break because they were glued inside of the coils as well. well good luck to you smcerm. don't worry to much if you chip or break the ferrite, it can be repaired with super glue

Thanks for the information. I was able to break the glue on the primary side, but not the other side. I've put the whole thing in some acetone like Forty suggested, and I am currently waiting.
Edit: It worked like a charm: the core slipped out smoothly. I appreciate the help!
